Hendersonville Votes to Keep IRV

On Friday, April 8, the City Council of Hendersonville, North Carolina voted to continue using instant runoff voting for the year. Hendersonville is currently participating in North Carolina's Instant Runoff Voting Pilot Program, which allows cities and towns in NC to use IRV for local elections.

Hendersonville is an early adopter of instant runoff voting, and citizens have reported positive experiences with the voting system. Earlier exit polls have demonstrated overwhelming support for IRV, particularly when compared to the city's previous system for electing candidates.

Nancy Glowacki, representing the League of Women Voters of Hendersonville, spoke in favor of IRV:

I commend you for your previous support of instant runoff voting and urge you to continue this time-saving, money-saving and fair, positive approach to engage more citizens in electing their public officials. IRV reduces cost of elections for both candidates and the general public. The ridiculously low turnout for runoff elections does not warrant the justification of both money and the time.
